Abstract
Given
that a
student’s
perception
of the
value
of
mathematics
may
affect
his or her
success
in a
college
course
, the
objective
of this
study
was to
investigate
the
following
question
: would
classroom
experiences
with
realworld
data
modeling
improve
developmental
students’
perception
of the
value
of
mathematics
? If
modeling
does
affect
student
perception
,
including
such
experiences
in the
curriculum
may
enhance
student
success
.
Seventeen
participants
,
unprepared
to
succeed
in a
college
mathematics
course
and
enrolled
in
one
of
two
sections
of a
basic
mathematics
course
,
completed
an
attitude
survey
before
and
after
completing
two
classroom
modeling
experiences
.
Selected
students
also
participated
in
separate
interviews
with the
investigator
. The
change
in
survey
scores
between
two
administrations
produced
a
p
value
of.16
through
the
Wilcoxon
Paired
Rank
Test
.
Although
not
statistically
significant
, the
survey
results
were
combined
with the
comments
from
selected
student
interviews
. In
analyzing
the
combined
data
it
can
be
said
that
students
may
benefit
from
adapting
the
curriculum
to
include
modeling
activities
.
Analysis
of the
interviews
indicated
that
students
failed
to
see
the
link
between
mathematics
and
careers
outside
of
mathematics
or the
difference
between
mathematics
and
arithmetic
. By an
inability
to
recognize
these
relationships
,
students
demonstrated
that
some
overt
instruction
regarding
careers
,
arithmetic
, and their
respective
connections
with
mathematics
may
be
beneficial
.
