Abstract
This
thesis
examines
conics
under
different
metrics
.
Conics
have been
studied
throughout
history
using
different
approaches
.
Apollonius
studied
conics
by
exploring
the
intersection
of a
plane
and
two
cones
.
Later
,
algebraic
equations
were
used
for
studying
conics
. This
study
will
examine
the
properties
of
conics
from a
geometric
perspective
by
graphing
the
conics
based
on their
geometric
definition
via
a
computer
algebra
system
.
One
interesting
observation
is
the
disconnection
of an
ellipse
under
certain
metrics
. The
conditions
for
which
this
occurs
can
be
approximated
from a
graphical
approach
.
We
also
determine
the
exact
values
using
an
algebraic
approach
.
